Preparing Your Lawn for the Summer Heat

Your lawn is an important part of your garden, and taking care of it before the summer heat hits can keep it looking lush and green all season long. Here’s how to prepare your lawn for the warmer months:

Aerating the Lawn

Aerating your lawn helps to break up compacted soil, allowing water and nutrients to reach the roots more effectively. You can rent an aerator or hire a professional to do the job. Aeration is especially important for lawns that get heavy traffic.

Fertilizing for Growth

Apply a slow-release fertilizer to your lawn to encourage strong growth throughout the summer. Be sure to choose a fertilizer with the right nutrient balance for your grass type.

Mowing Properly

When mowing, leave the grass slightly longer than usual to help it retain moisture and shade the soil. A higher mowing height helps the grass withstand heat stress. Avoid cutting more than a third of the grass blade at a time, as cutting too short can damage the lawn.

Watering Deeply

During hot weather, water your lawn early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation. Deep watering, rather than frequent shallow watering, promotes strong root development. Aim to water the lawn at least once a week, or more often if needed.

Dealing with Weeds

Weeds can quickly take over your lawn in summer. Apply a pre-emergent weed killer in early spring, and remove any visible weeds by hand or with a spot treatment. Keep your lawn thick and healthy to prevent weeds from establishing.

By preparing your lawn now, you’ll ensure it stays green and healthy even through the hottest months.
